Around 10% of shoulder dislocations will result in nerve damage. Commonly the axillary nerve is damaged. In mild cases, this presents as a patch of numbness on the outer aspect of your arm. In more severe cases, the muscles of Teres Minor and Deltoid are affected. This makes it difficult to lift your arm away from your body, and turn your hand outwards away from your body.
In severe cases, other aspects of the brachial plexus are stretched or torn resulting in weakness of muscles down the arm. At Auckland Shoulder Clinic we are very experienced in the treatment of these complex injuries.
